France / Former great domain
Marseille
An erased domain.
Marseille is no longer a Praxis. It is not vacant territory offered to the first claimant. Since 2017, it has been the place where an old Court, its habits and protections ceased to form a shared world.
A vast, living, watched human city remains. Among the Kindred, what remains is chiefly absence, addresses whose status no one knows, and a few presences too weak to call survival a government.

Before the void
Loïse Cousineau, called Rouge Roi, is a Ninth Generation elder. She began ruling Marseille in the 1940s. Her government concentrates authority, fear and the capacity to punish around a figure few dare challenge.
This centralisation holds the Court together while Loïse is present. It also makes every relationship more dependent on her arbitration. Survivors still argue: did her rule protect Marseille, or prevent the city from learning to live without her?

2017
Loïse answers the Beckoning. A major Second Inquisition offensive strikes at almost the same time. Both events are established; their causality is not. No one knows whether her absence opened a window, whether an operation already in preparation hastened departures, or whether the dates merely coincided.
Havens, relays, companies and meeting places fall quickly enough to prevent the Court understanding the extent of the compromise. There is no final battle to give meaning to the loss. The system stops answering.

What disappeared
An authority, mediators, shared memory, recognised hunting rights and the ability to ask for protection disappeared together. An address still standing does not mean its network survived. An old debt no longer has a Court before which it can be recalled.
Refugees leave for Lyon, Toulouse, Paris or farther away. Their arrival shifts balances elsewhere. They carry needs, trauma and sometimes habits their hosts consider dangerous.

Residual presences
In July 2025, no significant community has re-established itself. Noura Belkacem, a Thin-Blood probably Embraced in 2021, never knew the old Court. Matteo Santini, a Caitiff and former peripheral courier, returns quietly in 2023.
They govern nothing. Their presence says only that a city may remain biologically habitable after ceasing to be socially safe.
05 / Marseille
Hunting almost alone
The human population offers prey. The absence of nocturnal society removes warnings, mediators and shared habits. A visitor does not know which venues already drew attention, which camera belongs to an ordinary human system and which address was compromised in 2017.
Havens fall into burned addresses, ghost addresses and new addresses. The first may still be watched. The second are impossible to interpret. The last require rebuilding a human identity and therefore creating new traces.

Surveillance after victory
The Second Inquisition does not need to occupy the city like an army. Preserved files, automatic alerts and periodic correlation are enough to make lasting resettlement dangerous. A network trying to replace the old one exactly would reveal what mattered.
This surveillance is neither omniscient nor constant. That is what makes it hard to measure. A quiet night may mean forgetting, observation or waiting.

The French trauma
Paris invokes Marseille to defend discipline. Brittany sees the weakness of centralised systems. Bordeaux observes properties turned into evidence. Lille and Strasbourg remember human cooperation across borders. Occitania knows sovereignty recognised by Kindred offers no protection against institutions that cannot see it.
No one openly attempts to reclaim the domain. The first power visible enough to announce its return would also offer the first coherent picture to those who learned to watch.

A diaspora without a common government
Survivors do not share one account of the collapse. Some blame Loïse for making the city dependent on central arbitration. Others believe her presence would have prevented the catastrophe. Views of Paris are equally divided: not intervening may look like abandonment or like refusing to offer new targets. None of these accounts proves what caused the purge.
Reception elsewhere creates dependencies of its own. Occitania offers an interlocutor independent of Paris; the capital can provide status and networks, but also treats refugees as sources on the Second Inquisition. Being received does not rebuild Marseille’s Court. Survival remains a personal situation, not evidence that a hidden organisation has already been restored.
