Sacré-Cœur
A religious monument in the eighteenth arrondissement whose silhouette and visitors dominate Montmartre.
02 / The place
The Sacré-Cœur stands above Montmartre and remains visible from many parts of Paris. The basilica, its surroundings and the routes leading to it receive worshippers, visitors and the ordinary activity of the neighbourhood. This presence continues beyond the most predictable hours.
Within La Forteresse, the monument is an immediate landmark, but it does not define the whole eighteenth arrondissement. Kindred approaching the site must respect its religious purpose and account for the constant exposure of the hill. Stairs, squares and neighbouring streets allow few truly discreet arrivals. The height provides a view across the city; it also places anyone standing there within range of many eyes.
