Hosting without becoming everyone else’s border.

Béziers connects vineyards, the Canal du Midi, coastal roads and routes towards Spain. This position makes it a prized relay and a city that directly bears the cost of outside tensions.

The Five Ladders

The Five Ladders distribute resources and responsibilities. When the Court arrives, they negotiate hunting and passage firmly. Béziers refuses to let a temporary stop turn its streets into a permanent military apparatus.

The five responsibilities

The Five Ladders distribute power between Maïa Cazals for Houses, Samira Ben Saïd for Routes, Miquèl Roca for Lands, Gaspard Azaïs for Accounts and Nadia Esquerré for Voices. These are five Consuls, not five assistants to a hidden ruler. Each responsibility makes one part of the domain indispensable to the others.

What one voice cannot surrender

Ordinary business requires three votes; serious decisions require four. Certain matters, including receiving a genuine military force, require all five. No Consul can surrender Béziers to an outside power, even Armand. Refusing to become a military border rests on a decision rule, not merely a statement of intent.

Influence beyond the seats

Éloi Viala, Master of Nights, has considerable influence without holding one of the five seats. Béziers therefore distinguishes institutional decisions from the capacities needed to carry them out. People indispensable to hospitality, resources or relationships are not necessarily those who vote.

Hosting the Court

The sovereigns’ arrival increases audiences, hunting needs and demands for discretion. Local authority retains ordinary governance and negotiates the resources committed.
